Reese Witherspoon To Adapt Bestselling Novel ‘Where The Crawdads Sing’ Into A Film

Where the Crawdads Sing is being adapted into a film!

Reese Witherspoon has stepped up to turn the bestseller and debut novel written by Delia Owens into a film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Olivia Newman, who wrote and directed Netflix’s First Match, will direct the film.

Witherspoon originally selected Where the Crawdads Sing as her Reese’s Book Club pick in September 2018, just one month after the book was released. The novel was an immediate success and went on to appear at the top of The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers lists in 2019 and 2020 and also held the coveted spot of being Amazon’s top-selling fiction book in 2019.

Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of a young girl named Kya who gets abandoned by her family among a marsh in North Carolina. She learns to fend for herself and teaches herself about nature. Kya takes reading lessons from a local boy who becomes her first love. Kya’s romantic life takes a turn for the worst, however, when she falls for the town’s golden boy and is eventually accused of his murder.

Witherspoon’s company Hello Sunshine will produce the Crawdads film adaption. Hello Sunshine has also worked in the past on her adaptations of WildGone GirlBig Little Lies, and Little Fires Everywhere.
